The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side
As many people don’t notice almost everyone is always looking for better, never happy with what they have. Because of this someone getting three wishes is the perfect gift. In the story “The Third Wish” a man learns that even the littlest things can make a person happy.
“The grass is always greener on the other side.” This is the way that most people think. That if they had certain things, or lived in certain places it would be better. That it this one thing changes my life would be better. The truth is that everyone wants more, and in the story “The Third Wish” these old man is thinking that he would be happier only if he had a wife. So when he gets a wife he is very surprised that he isn’t happy, not because of the girl but because she is being punished just so he could be happy. Just like the king said the man uses his wish to undo the first wish. One thing that he learned from his wife was that he is fine with what he has and doesn’t always need more. If everyone learned this lesson people would live a much better life just being happy and grateful with what they have.
“The Third Wish” is a romance because of the symbols it has throughout the whole story, starting with the swan. When he finds the swan it is stuck and the old man freed the bird which gave him three wishes. After that the talk of water, forest, and nature describes where this man lives. The water is a symbol of life, just like plants are. Even though in the end of it the old man ends up dying it is not a bad thing in this situation it was actually something that was there to show freedom. As it says in the story “In the morning Mr. Peter was found peacefully dead in his bed with a smile of great happiness on his face.” Because of this sentence it shows that he was happy with his life.
The “Third Wish” has more than just symbols that make it a romance; The wholes story has a fantasy way to it. It talks about wishes and genies, things that are only told in the fairy tales. Because of the fantasy it makes you imagine and creates escapism. It makes you escape to a place where you can dream and that is what a romance is.
“The Third Wish” teaches that even a small thing like being with a sister can make you happy, and that if you always want more you will never appreciate what you have. If we all learned this lesson I think that we would all be much happier.
